This year’s FMX in Stuttgart, Germany, was a thrilling event which took attendees behind the scenes of movies, animation and VR. Chaos Group was excited to take part once again, taking over the Mannheim room on April 25 for V-Ray Day.
The talks began in spectacular fashion, with HP global industry manager Barbara Marshall and Chaos Group education specialist Albena Ivanova announcing the launch of the rendering phase of HP and NASA’s Mars Home Planet project. Entrants have until July 7 to create renderings of the buildings and machines which will make life on the red planet feasible, practical and comfortable; and have the chance to win some fantastic prizes.
Cube Creative’s Tanguy Weyland and Sylvain Grain then took to the stage to show how this French studio has built a production pipeline to handle everything from stylized reatures to photorealistic animals. There was plenty of laughter thanks to the slapstick animations.
Next up was RealtimeUK, the British company which has mastered the art of the game trailer with its promos for Jurassic World Evolution, Dropzone and SMITE. In a fascinating talk, art director Stu Bailey discussed how his team is able to execute its vision from concept art to the final product, while taking in time and budget restrictions.
The day finished where it started: in outer space, with PIXOMONDO's Max Reiss’s presentation on the effects for epic sci-fi TV series Star Trek: Discovery. Max boldly went into the details how they built assets and environments for this refresh of the Star Trek universe, and revealed the important role V-Ray played in making it look spectacular. It was standing room only and a great way to end our V-Ray Day presentations.
