World class VFX experts share their latest work

SIGGRAPH is an epic five-day conference and exhibition where visitors can experience the latest in digital art, emerging technologies, and hands-on creative collaboration. 

During the 2018 conference in Vancouver, Chaos Group will once again host the ever popular V-Ray Days on August 14th and 15th. This year's lineup includes in-depth talks on the biggest films, television shows and games from some of the world’s best VFX studios such as Method Studios, Digital Domain and ILM. We will also be holding a special Educators' Breakfast for those interested in learning more about V-Ray training resources and our co-founder Vlado will be unveiling the latest news on all things V-Ray during his talk, including Project Lavina.

Thanks to advances in rendering technology, skilled artists can now create photorealistic digital humans. But how do we build a real emotional connection with virtual subjects? With a little help from the old masters, Ian will discuss how we need to understand who we are, and what makes us human. He'll also explore the challenges and ideas behind his images, and what it means to create a new genre of portraiture.

Blockbuster Showcase — Method Studios

Chris will begin this trio of presentations with a look at the digi-doubles, crowds, vehicles and architectural models in Black Panther’s climax. Next, Jim will show how V-Ray’s VRScenes made it possible to build a spaceship the size of a solar system for Avengers: Infinity War. Finally, Christian will share his experience lighting and rendering Deadpool, Colossus and Cable for Deadpool 2.

Large Natural Environments Using V-Ray — ILM

Creating realistic large-scale natural landscapes like forests, jungles, and rocky terrains is always a challenge for the environment team at ILM. In this presentation, Daniel will show how V-Ray has helped ILM push rendering boundaries to achieve incredibly complex environments for movies such as A Wrinkle in Time and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The VFX powering Wakanda's Warrior Falls — Scanline VFX

For Black Panther's most climactic moments, Scanline VFX turned to Flowline and V-Ray to simulate and render the perilous backdrop of Wakanda's Warrior Falls. In this presentation, Ioan will reveal some exclusive breakdowns from these epic scenes involving complex water simulations and panoramic environments.

Corona Renderer: Past, Present & Future — Render Legion

Corona Renderer was commercially released little more than three years ago, and has already influenced some big changes in the architecture visualization industry. In this talk, Corona's main developer Ondra, reviews the original vision of the renderer, where it succeeded, and the challenges he aims to conquer.

Albena is one of our Education Specialists at Chaos Group, dedicated to researching and implementing best practices for technological improvements in education. Before joining the Chaos family, Albena worked as a regional manager in the IT industry. She’s passionate about machine learning, AI, and filmmaking.

Chris Ryan
CG Supervisor Method Studios

Chris has more than 20 years of experience in virtually every aspect of visual effects. His career has taken him around the world, and his feature credits include Legion, Lemony Snicket, The Great Gatsby, and X-Men: First Class. He brought his experience, creative eye, and expertise in Maya and Linux to Method in 2017.

Christian Emond
CG Artist/Lighter Method Studios

Over the course of more than 15 years in VFX, Canadian native Christian Emond has contributed his artistry to more than 35 features. Recent credits include The Maze Runner, Thor: The Dark World, Cloud Atlas, Okja, and most recently, Deadpool 2.

Daniel Schmid
Generalist Supervisor ILM

Daniel put aside a background in industrial engineering to pursue a career in visual effects. After 10 years in the industry, he joined ILM in 2013, where he contributed his expertise to movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now, Daniel’s working as environment supervisor on Disney’s upcoming live-action feature film Aladdin.

Fernando Brandão de Braga
Lighting & Lookdev Lead Digital Domain

With nearly a decade of CGI experience, Fernando has drawn upon a range of experience from creating architectural visualization to working on animated TV series, commercials and features. Working out of Digital Domain’s Vancouver studio, his recent projects of his include Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: Ragnarok and Fast 8.

Ian Spriggs
3D Character Artist Freelance

When Ian isn’t creating sci-fi beasts for film director Neill Blomkamp, he’s making beautiful, photorealistic CG portraits of his friends and family. Influenced by the Dutch Masters, these V-Ray rendered images demonstrate a masterful understanding of composition, lighting and pose.

Ioan Boieriu
CG Supervisor Scanline VFX

Ioan has been passionate about visual arts and computer science from early childhood, and he taught himself CG through sculpting, rigging and lighting digital humans. He began his career in animation, then took his talents to award-winning movies such as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Jungle Book, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Jim McVay
Lighting Dept. Supervisor Method Studios

Jim’s career started on set in the film industry in the mid 80s, then switched to graphics in the early 90s. In 1996 he joined Tippett Studio as a compositor on Starship Troopers, before moving to Method 2013. He’s served as lighting head of department for movies such as Doctor Strange, Allegiant, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Jon Cowley
Senior VFX Supervisor / Head of Production FuseFX

Jon joined the FuseFX Vancouver crew in 2017 as Head of Production and Senior VFX Supervisor. He brings with him 18 years of visual effects industry experience as a manager, supervisor and artist with credits including the blockbusters Furious 7, TRON: Legacy, The Great Gatsby, and District 9.

Justin Denton
Director Freelance

Justin loves telling stories through technology. He began his directing career with the VR experience Beware Crimson Peak, and went on co-direct Ghost in the Shell VR and The Possible: Listening to the Universe. He also wrote and directed short film and accompanying VR experience Burlap.

Lyudmil Vanev
CG Specialist Chaos Group

Lyudmil is a CG professional with more than 10 years experience in the field of architectural visualization, animation and visual effects. Before joining Chaos Group, he worked as a CG specialist and compositor at some of the biggest VFX studios in Bulgaria.

Michael Pecchia
Executive Producer Aaron Sims Creative

Michael is a key player in building the ASC brand and overseeing all aspects of VFX production from client collaboration to final asset delivery. Michael has 23 years of experience in the industry, most recently as Director of Global Development at Prime Focus and as a digital artist on films including Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Mariusz Korczak
CG Supervisor FuseFX

Mariusz is a CG Supervisor at Fuse FX Vancouver with 14 years of CG/VFX industry experience in feature films, tv series, game cinematics and commercials. As a 3D Generalist specializing in Lighting, he's worked on a diverse list of projects most recently Logan and Batman v Superman.

Ondra Karlík
CTO & Main Developer of Corona Renderer Render Legion

Ondra started in CG as an artist, but switched his focus to programming. In 2009, he started the development of Corona Renderer. The renderer became renowned for its simplicity and speed, and was released commercially in 2015. The company he founded, Render Legion, joined forces with Chaos Group in 2017.

Richard Greenwood
Head of 2D FuseFX

Richard has been a part of the FuseFX Vancouver team since its beginnings. He has contributed to high profile television projects, most recently as VFX Supervisor on The Magicians and The Mist. As Head of 2D, Richard oversees the compositing staff, helps train artists and manages the 2D pipeline.

Stu Bayley
Art Director RealtimeUK

As RealtimeUK’s Art Director, Stu Bailey has led major projects including a character-focused cinematic for SMITE, a cinematic for Dropzone, and the studio’s record-breaking Jurassic World trailer. Stu is proud to drive his passionate team to create unique and creative solutions to RealtimeUK’s clients’ needs.

Vladimir "Vlado" Koylazov
Co-Founder & Head of Software Development Chaos Group

Passionate about 3D graphics and programming, Vlado is the driving force behind Chaos Group’s software solutions. Vlado is an expert in rendering theory and an avid 3D community supporter and often participates in forum discussions to help users solve rendering challenges. In 2017, Vlado received a Sci-Tech Academy Award for V-Ray.
